How they differ

Garden of the Gods is about rock at close range. Its red and white sandstone fins, laid down between about 320 and 250 million years ago and tilted upright during the Laramide uplift about 70 to 60 million years ago, can be walked around on paved and dirt trails or seen from a car on the one-way loop roads. Entry is free every day from 5 am. The rock formations page names the main ones.

Pikes Peak is about height and distance. The city’s Pikes Peak Highway page describes a 19-mile road, open year-round weather permitting, with its entrance about 15 minutes west of Colorado Springs on US-24; allow 2 to 3 hours for the round trip. From May 22 to September 30, 2026, vehicles passing Mile 7 need a timed-entry permit, and a shuttle has run from Mile 7 to the summit on set summer dates (Gazette). The Cog Railway climbs 9 miles from its depot in Manitou Springs and takes about 3 hours round trip, per cograilway.com. Who each suits

The two differ most on altitude. Garden of the Gods sits at about 6,400 feet; the summit is more than 7,000 feet higher. The Pikes Peak Highway’s own health advice asks people with a history of severe heart or breathing problems not to go to the summit, and not to take infants under 6 months. Doing both in one day

The two fit in one day on the times the official sources give: 2 to 3 hours for the highway round trip, or about 3 hours on the Cog Railway, plus 90 minutes to 2 hours in the park. One order puts the summit in the morning, since summer afternoon storms can form within minutes at altitude, and the park in the late afternoon, when the park suggests the light is good and crowds are thinner. The two tours that combine them

• Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods Jeep Tour: 4 hours, limited to 8 participants, in a custom open-air jeep. The listing gives the 19-mile highway to the summit, time at the top, then a tour through Garden of the Gods; departures are in the morning. It includes heated rear seats, wool lap blankets, summit coats, emergency water and snacks, and highway fees. It is not suitable for pregnant women, people with respiratory issues or pre-existing medical conditions, or babies under 1. • From Denver: Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods Guided Tour: 8.5 hours from the Blue Bear sculpture in Denver, in a small group limited to 12. The listing gives Garden of the Gods, the summit, a drive through Manitou Springs and the return; entrance fees, round-trip transport and lunch are included, and it is not suitable for children under 8.
