The walk
The official park map gives the trail segment at 0.93 mile, and the park gives the walk as 1 mile round trip. The rise is under 150 ft. Through the natural window in the rock, Pikes Peak, at 14,115 ft, appears framed by red sandstone. Off-trail travel is prohibited; the hiking trails page has the map and trailheads.
When to go
The park suggests arriving before about 8 am or after about 4 pm for thinner crowds and lower light on the rocks. Summer afternoon storms can form within minutes, and in winter the trails can be icy. Pikes Peak itself can be hidden by cloud. See the best time to visit.
